Welcome to the Show

The Orioles today announced that they have recalled RHP BOB MCCRORY, RHP CHRIS LAMBERT and LHP CHRIS WATERS from Triple-A Norfolk and selected the contracts of INF JUSTIN TURNER and CA GUILLERMO RODRIGUEZ from Norfolk.

The Orioles have also placed OF ADAM JONES on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to September 2, with a sprained left ankle and transferred OF LOU MONTANEZ (right thumb surgery) and RHP BRAD BERGESEN (left shin contusion) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

McCrory, 27, was 0-3 with a 3.88 ERA (62.2IP, 27ER) in 50 games for Norfolk. He appeared in three games for the Orioles earlier this season, allowing five earned runs in five innings of work.

Lambert, 26, appeared in 10 games for Detroit over the last two seasons, going 1-3 with a 7.90 ERA (27.1IP, 24ER). In 24 Triple-A starts between Norfolk and Toledo this year, Lambert was 7-9 with a 3.84 ERA (138.1IP, 59 ER). The Orioles claimed Lambert off waivers from Detroit August 20th and optioned him to Norfolk. He will wear number 55 for the Orioles.

Waters, 29, went 9-7 with a 4.49 ERA (114.1IP, 57 ER) in 29 games (20 starts) for the Tides. Waters was 3-5 with a 5.01 ERA (64.2IP, 36ER) in 11 starts for Baltimore last season.

Turner, 24, batted .300 (116-387) with two home runs and 43 RBI in 108 games for Norfolk. The right-handed hitting infielder was obtained by the Orioles in the December 9, 2008 trade that sent CA RAMON HERNANDEZ to Cincinnati. 2009 was Turner’s first season above the Double-A level. He will wear number 83.

Rodriguez, 31, split the season between Double-A Bowie, where he batted .251 (57-227) with five home runs and 21 RBI in 71 games, and Triple-A Norfolk, where he batted .222 (16-72) with nine RBI in 18 games. Rodriguez was signed by the Orioles November 15, 2008 as a minor league free agent. He played in 39 games for San Francisco in 2007. He will wear number 78.

The Orioles currently have 33 players on their active roster.

A few pre-game items

By Roch Kubatko on September 8, 2009 6:46 PM | Permalink | Comments (16)

Orioles manager Dave Trembley told reporters earlier today that Justin Turner was instructed to take ground balls at second and third base while he’s with the team. Turner also plays shortstop, and it’s possible that he could grab a few innings there.

Trembley also confirmed that Koji Uehara will join the Orioles tomorrow.

The bullpen will be further expanded by an unexpected acquisition.

The Orioles have agreed to a trade that will bring them left-hander Sean Henn from the Minnesota Twins for a PTBNL or cash. It won’t become official until tomorrow.

Henn was 0-3 with a 7.15 ERA in 14 games with the Twins this season, and he’s 2-9 with a 7.50 ERA in 54 major league games. He’s been much better in the minors, going 23-21 with a 3.57 ERA in 137 games.

He also was quite good in the film “Milk,” though I’ll always think of him as Spicoli.

Please hold the “Dead Man Walking” jokes.

Turner makes ML Debut

Tidbits
The O’s were shut out for the eighth time this season, the first since a 4-0 loss to the Red Sox on Aug. 1 in Baltimore. The eight shutouts are the most against the O’s since being blanked in the same number of games in 2006. … Baltimore has allowed 10 or more runs in 15 games this season, including 10 against teams from the American League East and five times against Boston. … The O’s are now 2-12 against the Sox this season and 7-30 in their past 37 games at Fenway Park since the start of the ’05 season. … Baltimore gave up a season-high six home runs to Boston on Tuesday. The last time the Orioles gave up that many was Aug. 22, 2007, to the Rangers. … David Hernandez’s four home runs allowed Tuesday marked the third time this season an O’s pitcher has given up four home runs. … Justin Turner made his Major League debut Tuesday, entering as a pinch-hitter for third baseman Melvin Mora in the seventh inning. He stayed in the game at third, going 0-for-2. … Adam Jones was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle, retroactive to Sept. 2. … To make room on the 40-man roster for Turner and catcher Guillermo Rodriguez, who was also called up Tuesday, the O’s transferred outfielder Lou Montanez (right thumb surgery) and right-hander Brad Bergesen (left shin contusion) to the 60-day DL.

Turner’s on the hit list

Rookie infielder Justin Turner tacked his own footnote onto a historic night at Yankee Stadium on Friday, when he got the first hit of his big-league career late in the game. Derek Jeter had broken New York’s record for hits earlier, and Turner’s first was more of an afterthought.

Still, despite the forgotten nature of his hit, Turner was glad to have done it.

“I’m still never going to forget it for the rest of my life. Nobody can ever take it away from me,” he said. ”It’s always good to get the first one out of the way. You don’t have to worry about it.”

Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said that Turner — who was acquired from Cincinatti last winter as part of the Ramon Hernandez trade — will mostly play second in the Majors. Trembley also said that it was good to see Turner get a hit in a hostile atmosphere.

“It’s something he’ll remember, getting it at Yankee Stadium on a night like that,” he said. ”I don’t know which day they’re going to put it on — the 11th or the 12th — because it was after midnight. …I was glad we could put him in there and glad we could get it out of the way.”

Orioles and Yankees lineups (Mora scratched)

By Roch Kubatko on September 13, 2009 11:44 AM | Permalink | Comments (25)

Melvin Mora was back in the lineup, which meant he would have passed Doug DeCinces and moved into second place for most games played at third base for the Orioles. But Mora was a late scratch because of a sore right elbow, so I’ll send along the corrected lineup.

I don’t need to tell you who ranks first on this list. Which reminds me, whatever happened to Glenn Gulliver?

No, no, no.. Brooks Robinson played in 2,870 games. Mora and DeCinces are tied at 793.

I think the record is safe.

Those non-waiver deadline deals in 2000 didn’t pan out for the Orioles, but they did pull Mora from the Mets, and eventually re-signed shortstop Mike Bordick. That one worked out in their favor, no matter how little we saw of Mike Kinkade. And how quickly Pat Gorman disappeared from baseball’s landscape.
